Hedgewick Gardens
How many years have you been farming?
20 years
What are you growing?
Flowers, fruit and vegetables
What farming practices do you use and why?
I use what has lately been called low-impact farming. I strongly believe in organics, but being “certified” creates certain challenges that are not feasible for most of us small farmers here on Vinalhaven. I believe in preserving our soil and resources. I hand cultivate, use drip irrigation and rarely use any non-OMRI sanctioned pesticides or additives. You won't find any pressure treated wood or “chemical” fertilizer here. I want to feel safe eating my produce right in the garden without washing it! I try to use materials found here on Vinalhaven as much as possible, by recycling or supporting our island or at least Maine businesses.
What inspires you to farm?
I am inspired by the life and energy force of the earth, by the memory of my grandparents 150 acre farm, and the beauty and taste of homegrown vegetables and flowers.
What is your favorite vegetable/fruit and why?
This is a toss up between strawberries, raspberries and cucumbers, just because homegrown tastes SO much better than commercially grown.
