Hall Farm
Farmer Hall
Ethan Hall
How many years have you been farming?
3 years farming, 12 years gardening
What are you growing?
I am growing a diverse assortment of annual vegetables, approximately 20 types and multiple varieties of each. Also, strawberries!
What farming practices do you use and why?
I farm using traditional hand tools and bio-intensive planting. A lot of my techniques have been adapted from the work of Elliot Coleman. I use season extending modern materials; row covers, a greenhouse, mini-hoops and irrigate with drip lines (which maximize water efficiency). I'm interested in building a well functioning farm system that is more dependant on labor than it is on oil. I farm the way I do because I strongly believe in the re-establishment of a sustainable, healthy and vibrant farm economy on Vinalhaven. And too because I find working so closely with living things to be some of the most challenging and rewarding work I've yet to encounter.
What inspires you to farm?
I gather inspiration from traditional farming methods, the world over, which have succeeded in feeding people for thousands of years using such methods. My inspiration comes from a want to see our island remain healthy and vital. The more people growing more food the better. Plant your lawns with food!
What is your favorite vegetable/fruit and why?
Spinach is my favorite! I could eat spinach everyday and not get tired of it!
